Christmas Jumpers

Have you got your Christmas jumper yet? They are everywhere this year and seem to be a 'fashion' thing that isn't going away anytime soon! I confess I left a little late this year to get one - lots of shops have already sold out of them. I eventually bought one from Next Outlet and it is similar to the one below, except in black:

Here are a few more fun Christmas jumpers:

Enjoy wearing yours this Christmas!

Red for December

As Christmas is this month, a good colour to wear for December is, you've guessed it - red!! However, a really bright, Father Christmas red will not suit every type of colouring. If you have light colouring, i.e. blonde hair, light eyes and fair skin, then wear a light red like this:

This red won't overpower your delicate colouring and we will see your face first, rather than your clothes.

If you are deep in colouring (dark hair, dark eyes, dark or olive skin) then this red would look good on you:

As a deep, you could combine this red with another deep colour such as black, purple or forest green for a sophisticated look.

People with cool colouring - ash-toned hair, pink in skin and cool blue or brown eyes, should go for the following red:

This is a blue-red as opposed to an orange red, which is warm - see below.

If you are predominantly warm - red or hair with red tones, ivory skin, warm eyes e.g. hazel, green, some blues, then this red would look great on you:

For those of you who have bright colouring, dark hair, light skin, jewel-like eyes, such as Courtney Cox or Katy Perry, then wear this red:

This is the clear, true red most often associated with Christmas, but as previously mentioned, it's not for everyone.

Lastly, if you have muted, soft colouring (you could have brown eyes/blonde hair or blue eyes/light brown hair) go for this red:

This red doesn't 'shout' at you but is beautifully blended and soft.

So, whatever you choose to wear in red this December, make sure it suits you and have fun wearing it!

Quality over Quantity

Why do we do it? Buy cheaply that is and then regret it! Sometimes we just want a quick fix or we tell ourselves we really need that item of clothing, bag, shoes or whatever when we haven't really planned, budgeted or thought long about it. But.. it looks so tempting in the store - hanging there on the hanger and it's only £6/£7.50 - a bargain. So, we buy it and wear it a few times. It seems okay doesn't it? Then we wash it and wear it and wash it again and hmmm - the jumper/cardigan or whatever is starting to look bobbly or is going shapeless and a bit sad. So then we obviously can't wear it out anywhere can we so we wear it just in the house and then it joins several other jumpers or items of clothing that have gone the same way! Finally, it gets relegated to the bag of clothes to take to the jumble sale or charity shop - and only after 6 months. Oh dear....

The answer, of course, is NOT to buy cheap. Because you always end up buying twice. Wardrobe planning is the way to go. Really think about what you need and commit it to paper if necessary. We really don't need 10 poor quality cardigans in our wardrobes, when 3 better quality ones will hold up for much longer after lots of washing and ironing. I find that clothing that is 100% acrylic does not last very long. Try to buy clothing with a percentage of wool or cotton or silk or even cashmere in the mix, such as the jumper below from Debenhams.

With shoes, belts or handbags, leather is going to last much longer but you don't have to buy designer accessories - department stores usually have them at reasonable prices. The bag below is also from Debenhams.

Let's aim to buy the best quality items we can afford (without getting into debt!) and hopefully our clothes will give us good service.

Amendment to The Charity Shopper information

I recently posted about a bag called The Charity Shopper and didn't give the correct information. The correct web address is: www.justgiving.com/teams/TheCharityShopper, where you can find out more information and purchase the bag for £9.95 not £19.95 as I stated in my post on 3 September. A very stylish bag for under £10.

My Boden picks A/W '14

I always enjoy looking at the new Boden ranges each season. Some of the patterns are a little too busy for me but it's still possible to find plain or less highly patterned clothes amongst the riot of patterns. So here are some of my choices:

This navy and red coat is very smart and classic in style - I really like the red edging.

A plain dress is a useful addition to a wardrobe and can be dressed up or down with either flats or heels, more or less jewellery, depending on where you would wear it.

This pencil skirt and cashmere jumper could be worn together - not necessarily in these colour combinations but there are several good colours to choose from.

Again, these trousers would go with the above cashmere jumper and be worn with boots as well as shoes.

I like the shape of this Draycott bag and at £150+ it's a definite investment piece that would last several years.

Product Review - Mary Kay

I've been using Mary Kay Timewise products for a few months now and have been quite pleased with the results. My skin has never once felt dry when using them but feels smooth, soft and hydrated. My particular favourite is the Timewise SPF30 Day Solution, which goes on after cleansing with the 3 in 1 cleanser and under the Age Fighting Moisturiser.

I have to admit to not using sun protection in the past unless I'm on holiday (shame on me!) but this really makes a difference to the smoothness of my skin every day. After cleansing at night, I use the Night Solution which is like a gel with tiny beads in it.

I prefer to use one range rather than mix up skincare ranges and Mary Kay Timewise is definitely well worth trying.

Charity Shopper

Last week I acquired  a shiny, black tote bag called The Charity Shopper from Charlotte Carver, who with her husband Bill also runs The Little Leather Box Company (www.thelittleleatherboxcompany.com). The bag is a good size and can be used to put anything you like in from picnics to laptop!  It has a stylish purple lining too. You can buy one from www.justgiving.com. Just go to the website and donate to a charity and buy one for £19.95 or two for £30.00. Great to give as a present.

What I Wore Day 31

I've done it! I've finally made it to the end of August with (more or less) a different outfit every day. Here's my final one:

After doing this experiment, several items of clothing definitely won't make it to next summer's wardrobe. I'm planning on doing another What I Wore in January, with winter clothes, so watch this space.

Now that I've been kick-started into regular blogging (thanks Alice!) my aim is to keep going, so thanks to all of you who have been reading my blog.

What I Wore Day 30

The weather seems unable to make up its mind what to do but it's not cold so short sleeves are okay - there will be plenty of time to wear longer sleeves soon.

The predominant colours I've worn this summer have been navy, coral and white and this is no exception. A capsule wardrobe consisting of a fairly limited colour palette makes it easy to mix and match clothes, particularly when going on holiday or travelling.

What I Wore Day 29

I'm kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel now to find different combinations of clothes to wear but only two more days of 'What I Wore' left and I'm sure I'll manage to complete what I started!

Not entirely happy with today's outfit but okay I suppose for around the house.

What I Wore Day 28

The weather is feeling a little warmer than of late and I heard talk of summer returning next week - good!! Here's what I wore today:

Let's not put away our warm weather clothes quite yet then - it seems more mileage is still to be had out of those summer dresses etc.

What I Wore Day 27

A rather late post as my camera batteries ran out! Anyway, here is my outfit of the day:

I like this dress from Precis as it is easy to wear and very forgiving. It can be worn all year round too. In the summer with lighter coloured accessories and in the winter with black tights and red or black accessories.

What I Wore Day 26

I dug this long sleeved top out of the depths of my wardrobe today and am wearing it with a cami underneath and black jeans.

Definitely not a day for short sleeves, and I also have socks on to keep warm!

What I Wore Day 25

I'm singin' in the rain......:).  Today in the UK it's August Bank Holiday and, of course, it's raining!  Well, if it brightens up later we may go out but in the meantime, here's what I'm wearing today (minus the mac indoors of course):

Hope you all have a great Bank Holiday Monday.

What I Wore Day 24

Up bright and early and off to church this morning and I was determined to get at least one more wearing this summer out of my white jeans before they go into hibernation.

I'm wearing gold jewellery today, which seems to show up better than silver in the photos. The gold jewellery goes with the gold (coloured) edged buttons on the cardigan. As far as possible, it's best to not mix metals but stick to one or the other throughout.

What I Wore Day 23

I was in town shopping with my daughter for several hours today but here is what I wore:

Unfortunately, I wasn't shopping for myself, but my daughter bought a dress and jeans from Dorothy Perkins and some new glasses from Specsavers and wanted my help with choosing the glasses! I also bought some clothes for my granddaughter-to-be as I can't resist baby clothes. :)

What I Wore Day 22

Today I'm wearing just a remix of what I've worn several times before this month. It's been challenging to come up with a different combination everyday, but maybe I have more clothes than I thought I had!

I have resisted buying much this August as I wanted to use what I already have in my wardrobe. Anyway, still quite a few more days to go yet with this experiment.

WIW Day 21

Again, not such a warm day today and quite windy where I live up on a hill. So here is what I wore today:

My new shoes are still hurting my feet but I'm going to persevere with them blisters and all!

What I Wore Day 20

Red, White & Blue....I'm looking very patriotic today and had the photos taken by the apple tree in our garden, which is, of course, quintessentially English! Weather not overly warm so a cardigan was required.

My shoes, which I bought last year, are a cheap version of Converse from Primark! They were only £6.00 and for that price they are surprisingly comfortable :).

What I Wore Day 19

This is my outfit for today.  Cooler temperatures outside but still dry.

I haven't worn jeans for a while and it will soon be time to sort out my clothes for Autumn. Oh how quickly the summer goes but there is still a chance of warmer weather into September and even October.

What I Wore Day 18

Today I'm wearing a white skirt, red and white top and black accessories. In order to look co-ordinated, wear a maximum of three colours together, otherwise it starts to look messy. At least that's how I feel! There is a balance though, as you don't want to look too matchy matchy i.e. shoes and bag don't need to match, except that they do here in my photo as I don't have a red or white handbag.

I recently helped a friend sort through and get rid of several bags of clothing from her wardrobe that she wasn't really wearing. She can now see everything she has and nothing is hiding away at the back of her wardrobe and not being worn. If you would like me to help you sort out your wardrobe please email me on sallybright2@googlemail.com. I would be happy to help!

What I Wore Day 17

The weather started off rainy this morning (although none was forecast) but the sun came out and I decided to wear a skirt. I don't usually tuck tops in or wear a belt for that matter, but today I've experimented with doing just that and it wasn't too bad!

The skirt is from Debenhams, the top is from Dorothy Perkins and the cardigan from Kettlewell Colours.

What I Wore Day 16

Okay, so I'm bored with my summer wardrobe now! However, in just a few weeks' time it will be autumn and I know I will be missing those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer, so here's to making the most of it.

The apples on our tree need picking and so do the plums. That's my Saturday sorted then, apart from some Dunelm shopping this morning :).

What I Wore Day 15

Well, I'm at the half way point of doing What I Wore blog posts for the month of August. Today my husband and I went to visit Chedworth Roman Villa near Cirencester, which was an interesting tour. The weather was cool and a bit rainy but here's what I wore:

Thursday, 14 August 2014

What I Wore Day 14

I've gone a bit formal today with this suited look. A cardigan could be substituted for the jacket, and trousers for the skirt for a more relaxed feel.

Suited and booted is not totally my thing as I'm a classic/natural wardrobe personality. Of course there are occasions when we have to wear something smarter and a jacket or blazer is a useful basic in everyone's wardrobe.

What I Wore Day 13

Here is my outfit for today. I wore white jeans again as they haven't had much of an airing this summer. However, I managed to get a dirty mark on them which is very typical of me! Thankfully it doesn't show up in the photo.

Tuesday, 12 August 2014

What I Wore Day 12

Kind of a mixed bag of weather today - sunshine and showers. Here is my outfit of the day:

I've not really worn this jacket a lot as it's a bit boxy in shape and I'm not sure if I like it that much. However, I may experiment with wearing it more often - we shall see! I really need to treat it more like a cardigan than a jacket. I am a fan of stripes though.

What I Wore Day 11

I'm a little late posting today's outfit as I was out of the house for most of the day. However, here it is:

I bought a new pair of shoes today - the ones I'm wearing in the photo. They are neutral/tan leather flats by Dune and should go with several things in my wardrobe.

What I Wore Day 10

Today it had to be long trousers as it was raining on and off  most of the time and it was considerably cooler than of late. I actually quite like coloured jeans or chinos as they make a change from the usual blue denim.

I could, of course, have worn a top in another strongish colour, but wearing a neutral colour with a bright colour tones things down a bit. The top I'm wearing is black and white striped with black and white polka dots on the pocket and shoulders but in the photo it looks grey!
